Microsoft Office 365: Exchange Online Implementation and Migration

Chapter 2. Getting Familiar with the Office 365 Admin Portal

Now that we have shown you how to sign up for Office 365, it's important to get familiar with the administration interface as it is the central control point for everything to do with your subscription.

In this chapter we will walk you through the high-level interface, adding a domain to your subscription, as well as dive deep into the administration sub-interfaces. Topics covered include:

  • Logging in for the first time and adding your domain

  • Navigating the Administration Overview interface

  • The Exchange Online Administration interface

Logging in for the first time and adding your domain

To get to the administration interface, you will need to browse to https://portal.microsoftonline.com and log in with the credentials you chose during the sign-up process in Chapter 1, Getting Started:

The first step of utilizing Office 365 for your business requires that you add your domain (for example, yourcompany.com) in the portal. This is a necessary place to start as your domain will be used later in many aspects of the Admin Portal. To add your domain to Office 365, click on the Domains menu option on the left (see the following screenshot):

You will see that the tenant domain already exists (for example, yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com) in the listing. This domain cannot be removed, however after completing the next few steps, your Office 365 subscription will be set up in a way that the tenant domain will not be seen by your users.

Office 365 requires two key types of DNS records that are not supported by various...

Navigating the Administration Overview interface

In this section of the chapter we will take you through the high-level administrative interface for Office 365. The interface is broken down into several sections:

  • Setup

  • Management

  • Subscriptions

  • Support

Setup

The Setup section assists you in beginning your journey with Office 365.

Overview

The Overview section provides you with general information about how to get started with your Office 365 subscription, as well as links to more information. We will cover most of this information throughout the rest of this book as it relates to migration and Exchange Online:

Custom Plan

The Custom Plan section provides you with a wizard that walks you through the "getting ready" steps for performing the migration to Office 365. Again, most of this will be covered in detail in the remainder of this book:

Management

The key objective of the management section is to configure (at a basic level) Office 365 to suit your needs by way of user, group, and domain administration...

Exchange Online administration interface

Delving deeper into the Exchange Online administration interface is possible by clicking on Manage under Exchange Online in the Admin Overview page:

This will open a new tab within your browser and provide you with much more granular access to the interface.

While a great many features and functions are available through the web-based Exchange Online administration interface, a lot of functions are only available through PowerShell which will be covered later in the book.

Users & Groups

In the Users & Groups section of Exchange Online management, you have the ability to:

  • Create user mailboxes

  • Modify properties of user mailboxes

  • Create room mailboxes (for example, meeting rooms)

  • Create distribution groups or mail enabled security groups

  • External contacts

  • Perform mailbox migrations from Exchange 2010, 2007, 2003, and IMAP mail systems

Roles & Auditing

In the Roles & Auditing section of the Exchange Online management you have the ability to:

  • Define...

Summary

In this chapter we showed you how to find your way around Office 365 and the Exchange Online administrative interface. We also showed you how to start customizing Office 365 by adding your own domain to the environment. From here, you should now have the knowledge and tools to begin planning your migration to Exchange Online.

This book provides a great overview of Office 365 Exchange options. Where it also shines is the step by step process it takes you though when it comes to implementing the more complex hybrid options including DirSync and ADFS. You can read the Microsoft documentation but a simple overview followed by a step by step process with screen shots makes comprehension much easier. The book makes an excellent read for those looking to get into Office 365 and understand how to make it work. Even though not everyone will be interested in the more complex hybrid arrangements it is still worthwhile working through these so you do understand what is involved as the standard Microsoft technical documentation can be very hard to understand and follow at times. The book is easy to read and doesn't get too bogged down in the low level technical so it is quite suitable for a wide range of technical audiences. It does however delve deeply enough into the complexities to provide real value for those who are looking to implement these complex features. It doesn't try to provide all the answers simply a guide to how it all should work. I believe this makes it a great place to start for people looking to exactly what the book title says - Exchange Online Implementation and Migration. As the name suggests, the books is mainly focused around Exchange but there us also plenty of general Office 365 information contained within, especially in the beginning. I would certainly recommend this book to people who are looking to better understand the options for Exchange Online configuration and migration. It is a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone working on, or planning to work on Office 365 Exchange.

Great product that allowed me to sync my iphone with MS Outlook. It was not a seamless process, and better documentation and instructions would help. I certainly recommend it for MS Outlook.

This book provides a detailed implementation guide for migrating from on premise environment to Microsoft Office 365. The different Office 365 plans are described and differentiated. The writing is clear and concise. Both GUI and PowerShell command line examples are provided. Lastly, I found the references section very helpful.

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

For example:

  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
