Extracting hair from the scalp

Most methods for creating stylized hair begin with creating hair for the scalp. The easiest way to achieve this is using a mask extraction. A mask extraction will allow us to paint a mask onto the character's scalp, then duplicate the masked area into a separate object to form the basic shape of the character's hair. We used mask extractions once before in the Using mask extract to make a shirt section of Chapter 8, Making Accessories and Clothing. This section will be very similar, but instead of making a shirt, we will be making hair for the scalp of our character. Once we have the basic hair shape, we can continue to work on the hair with our sculpting tools.

Getting ready

For this section, we can use any bald character sculpture as a starting point. You can use your own creation, or you can choose from several characters we've provided with the previous chapters of this book:
