Understanding GFS backups to object storage with immutability

Object storage with VBR v12 is intended for long-term data storage in the case of your GFS backups, but now it can also be used for short-term storage with performance extents in a SOBR. The repositories are either a cloud solution or an Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3)-compatible storage solution that can be on-premises.

To go along with the new direct-to-object storage backups, which can be used with immutable repositories, you can now set up backup copy jobs with GFS going to these same immutable repositories. So, what does this give you? Some of the benefits are presented in the following list:

  • A second copy of your data to ensure you are meeting the 3-2-2-1-0 backup rule for backups
  • Another copy of your backups on immutable storage
  • A second copy of data in another location or possibly a disaster recovery (DR) site
