Educating the user about informed consent
Educating the digital identity recipients on the what, who, when, where, and why of their data gathering is the most important and first step. But where does the responsibility of the data collector end? Is it sufficient to give someone information and then hope that they read, listen to, and know it?
Think about a person’s reaction when they are alerted about a new update on their iPhone and Apple gives them tens of pages of terms and conditions that are inexplicable. Do users accept them because not doing so would take away a resource that is valuable to them? Do they accept them within reading because they’re excessive? Or do they take the time to read it fully and understand it?
