Getting inspiration

Previously, we explored inspiration for patterns. If you are looking for inspiration or templates, the sources are similar. Carefully examine some sites online that you find interesting. Start to break them down into sections and consider what elements are used to build them. For example, which parts could be repeat sections via template parts or patterns? How would they be formed?

It might be useful to start a digital scrapbook or just to start sketching in block format, a practice often referred to as napkin sketches. Another tip to consider is to think of the user experience. While having lots of templates and variations might seem great, what is it going to be like for the end user? What do you like encountering on other sites and what works in your target market?

A key to success is to look at other examples of similar sites to the one you are creating. Be inspired by those who have created before you. Start small and iterate once you know what works...
