Logical routing

NSX platform supports two modes of routing. In this section, we will learn about the two supported routing modes in NSX and how they can be used in some common routing topologies.

Distributed routing

Distributed routing in the NSX platform offers optimized and scalable way of handling all communications between virtual machines and all resources with the same data center. This communication flow is also known as East – West traffic within a data center. Usually, the amount of east west traffic in any data center is huge and is expected to grow with time.

Centralized routing

Centralized routing can also be used under the NSX platform with the aid of the NSX Edge services router, which provides traditional centralized routing support. Apart from centralized routing service, NSX edge services router also provides a bundle of services like NAT, DHCP, load balancing, and north-south traffic.
