Creating an NFS datastore


An NFS datastore is also a supported storage for hosting virtual machines. Although there are environments that run virtual machines on NFS datastores, they are commonly used to store ISOs, templates, and so on. In this section of the chapter we will learn how to mount an NFS share as a datastore.

Getting ready

Prepare a VMkernel interface for NFS. Read the Creating a new VMkernel interface for iSCSI or NFS recipe for instructions.

How to do it...

The following procedure will guide you through the steps required to mount an NFS share as a datastore to the ESXi server.

  1. With the ESXi server selected, navigate to Related Objects | Datastores and click on the new datastore icon to start the New Datastore wizard:

  2. In the New Datastore wizard, specify a name for the datastore and click on Next:

  3. Select NFS as the filesystem type and click on Next:

  4. Specify the NFS server name and the absolute path to the folder share created at the NFS server:

  5. Review the Ready to Complete screen...
