Following a Design Innovation process
This chapter focuses on a case study that follows parts of a Design Innovation process to help illustrate how we can design an informed wearable. The case study of Message Bag starts by scoping your wearable project. In this example, the problem area is forgetfulness and involves cognition and memory as the research topic. Scoping encompasses looking at the problem, so part of the research is for object-based memory aids. This ultimately led me to RFID systems. My original proof-of-concept prototype is shown here, photographed by Toby Harris (see Figure 12.1):

When scoping the topic, I read papers on forgetfulness and discovered that forgetfulness can impact an individual’s life negatively. It also has ongoing consequences. These consequences include stress, anxiety, embarrassment, shame, and feeling off or unsettled throughout the day (Ponds et al., 1997). When forgetfulness concerns...
