Gaps – What’s in the field and context research
Finding gaps happens when we research what has been done in the field. Researching with a variety of sources will help you to identify current solutions. What has worked in this field and what has not been as successful? Make notes of the technologies that have been used, and how you might integrate these into your work. Are there techniques or ways of working that have been explored in this problem space that you want to adapt for your topic?
Finding gaps can create opportunities. You might want to understand a range of products that have been created, but that people aren’t using. Explore the reasons behind this. Is it an overly complicated design? Are there too many features? Once you have done additional desk research on what exists in your chosen field, it is important to start creating a list of requirements. This planning can help shape the work you do.
