Timing is everything – planning a successful migration

When we move from one house to another, the process can take a long time. Maybe we move all our stuff at one time or make smaller moves over a few days or weeks. There are some factors to consider when we look at the process of moving our content into SharePoint Online.

How big is the truck?

The size of the vehicle we use to move can make a substantial difference in how long it takes. As we noted earlier, Microsoft puts throttling limits in place to prevent an overload on your tenant’s resources. We must essentially migrate through the same pipe that we use to conduct our daily business. Microsoft provides some guidance and estimates on performance and speed based on the types of content we’re migrating:

For light content migrations (ISO files and video files) – 10 TB/day

For medium content migrations (list items and Office files ~1.5 MB) – 1 TB/day
