Introducing data governance – what and why
First, let’s try to understand what data governance is and what it does. In layman’s terms, data governance is the process of assigning proper authority and taking decisions regarding data-related matters. According to the DGI, data governance is defined as “a system of decision rights and accountabilities for information-related processes, executed according to agreed-upon models that describe who can take what actions with what information, and when, under what circumstances, using what methods.”
As evident from this definition, it is a practice of creating definitive strategies, policies, and rules that define who can make what decisions or perform actions related to data. It also lays out guidelines about how to make decisions related to data.
