Oracle API Management 12c Implementation

Chapter 2. Implementation Case Study

This chapter introduces a case study that will be further developed throughout this book. The case study is designed to help the reader to understand the concepts presented throughout this book and how to apply them to implement an Oracle API Management solution. It describes a fictitious company that has previously introduced SOA and SOA Governance into the organization and that are now looking to expand this with API Management. It details many of the typical problems faced by organizations wishing to introduce APIs and how the benefits derived from their introduction must be tangible and measurable.

The case study is based on actual scenarios experienced by the authors and therefore should provide a realistic view of the key challenges faced when implementing API Management and how they can be overcome.

Case study description

WBCV Telecom is a manufacturer and retailer of mobile phones and devices. It has a very strong lineup of products that are considered niche and that result in high profit margins. WBCV has experienced rapid growth in the last six years but this has started to slow in recent months due to the emergence of new startup organizations employing dynamic business models and digital operations. Such companies are able to penetrate the market quickly by offering low cost and innovative products that are very disruptive in nature. These companies have low overheads and a high degree of automation and are challenging less agile and established businesses.

WBCV Telecom's CIO realized that in order to compete with organizations employing disruptive and dynamic business models, they too had to transform their operations and modernize their IT systems in order to become a true digital organization. In other words, the WBCV CIO realized that in order to compete with organizations...

Discovery and readiness assessment

The first step for 4APPmigos was to create a workshop schedule that listed all the individuals (and their roles) that were required to attend each session. All identified individuals were expected to attend and strong senior management backing ensured that this would be the case. The workshops were divided into five groups, each covering a specific architectural domain, as described here:

  • Business: Understand from key business representatives the role of disruptive and digital technologies in their business strategy. APIs are exposed to help digitize business processes and supply chain management and without proper alignment with the business strategy, an ASG strategy is doomed to failure.

    Tip

The business representatives need to be aware of what APIs are and the critical role they play in digital transformation, so 4APPmigos had prepared a short, comprehensive presentation that described, in business language terms, what APIs are, why they are important...

Gap analysis

The results of the capability analysis indicated that WBCV was reasonably mature in SOA. This was to be expected given that WBCV had already made a significant investment in maturing its SOA implementation and had already started to see the fruits of that investment. Likewise, WBCV's enterprise architecture team had been implementing The Open Group Architecture Framework TOGAF for the past few years and, although they were still facing some challenges rolling it out across the entire organization, they were in fairly good shape in this discipline.

Note

For further information on TOGAF please refer to this:

http://www.opengroup.org/subjectareas/enterprise/togaf

Furthermore, given that WBCV's CIO had already created a digital strategy and initiated a digital transformation process, WBCV scored well in this domain also. However, the conclusion was that the digital strategy didn't give enough relevance to APIs and their role in delivering a seamless customer experience...

Recommendations

In order to address the identified gaps in terms of people, processes, and tools, 4APPmigos made the following recommendations in their report:

  • People and organization: New business capabilities (for example an order management service or sales order service) should be delivered by a single multi-disciplinary team containing all skills required. This model implies smaller team sizes, with all the necessary skills to develop and support a business capability co-located. As a result, communication gaps and management overheads would be avoided. Also, because these capabilities would be delivered following ASG principles, solutions should in principle be modular and integrate cohesively.

Upskill existing personnel responsible for SOAs so that they can further define, build, and support APIs. This would be much more beneficial than creating new teams or hiring new personnel just for the purpose of handling API requirements. This would be a first step towards the adoption of Application...

Roadmap

Having defined a digital reference capability model, evaluated, and selected the right set of API Management products and also created a technical architecture for the solution, the next step in the process was to create a high-level plan describing the different phases and milestones required to deliver all aspects of the solution. To this end, 4APPmigos developed the following implementation roadmap. The roadmap is straightforward and simple to follow; its objective was to raise awareness of the journey of implementing API Management to senior managers and to the relevant teams. The intention was to depict, on one page, the phases, objectives, milestones, and timelines needed to deliver the overall solution.

Roadmap

Note

4APPmigos also delivered a detailed plan and an estimated cost for the implementation of the API Management solution. This level of detail, however, is not provided in this book as project planning and estimating are part of the project management discipline which is not...

Description

Oracle SOA Governance is a comprehensive, service-orientated governance solution that is designed to make the transition to SOA easier. API management is the discipline that governs the software development lifecycle of APIs. It defines the tools and processes needed to build, publish and operate APIs including the management of the community of developers around it. This book illustrates how to successfully implement API Management in your organization. To achieve this, the importance of defining an API management strategy and implementation roadmap so that capabilities are implemented in the right order and timeframes is described. It starts by describing all of the fundamental concepts around API Management and related disciplines such as SOA Governance and DevOps in order to dispel the confusion surrounding these topics. The book then takes you on the journey of implementing API Management, using a realistic case study of an organization that needs an API Management solution. You will start by identifying the key business drivers to implement APIs and then create an API Management strategy and a roadmap to realize this strategy. You’ll then go through a number of use cases, each focused on addressing specific business requirements. These will help you understand each of the Oracle API Management products, how they fit into an overall architecture, and how to implement them. The book concludes by providing some tips and guidelines around defining a deployment topology for the Oracle API Management products and the steps to install them.

Excellent book. I liked it because it firstly provided enough context and educational information on what an API and API management actually is. It also explained it's relation to SOA. It then provided a really good case study with plenty of examples. It then went on to show using real samples how and why to implement the different products of the suite.
