Chapter 12. Maximum Availability

Oracle has provided technologists and businesses with a suite of technologies, to ensure high availability as a protection against data loss caused by natural disasters and unplanned events. The suite of these technologies is known as the Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA). In this chapter, we will discuss how to implement best practices for the Oracle 11g MAA using Oracle 11g Streams and Data Guard with Oracle 11g RAC environments. In a nutshell, these comprise the following core technologies within Oracle 11g:

  • Oracle 11g Streams Replication

  • Oracle GoldenGate Replication

  • Oracle 11g Standby Databases (Data Guard)

GoldenGate is a third-party solution for replication that will not be discussed as Streams provides a similar functionality. It is now part of the Oracle product family after a recent purchase by Oracle.
