OpenStack Essentials

Chapter 2. Identity Management

In the previous chapter, we installed OpenStack using RDO Triple-O. Now that OpenStack is ready for use, we will begin to investigate what was installed and how to use it component by component, starting with identity management. Keystone is the identity management component in OpenStack. In this chapter, we will look at service registration and the relationship of users with tenants, and the role of a user in a tenant.

Services and endpoints

Each one of the components in an OpenStack cluster is registered with Keystone. Each of the services has endpoints and each of the services has a user. A service in Keystone is a record of an OpenStack component that will need to be contacted to manage the virtual resources being managed by OpenStack. Endpoints are the URLs to contact these services. Let's look at this on the command line. Remember the overcloudrc file on the instack node? You'll need the information in that file to authenticate and interact with the OpenStack overcloud. The information is as follows:

undercloud# cat overcloudrc
export OS_NO_CACHE=True
export OS_CLOUDNAME=overcloud
export OS_AUTH_URL=http://192.0.2.6:5000/v2.0
export NOVA_VERSION=1.1
export COMPUTE_API_VERSION=1.1
export OS_USERNAME=admin
export no_proxy=,192.0.2.6
export OS_PASSWORD=mg4xQF4bnETuNgGGtp6t9CXMJ
export PYTHONWARNINGS="ignore:Certificate has no, ignore:A true SSLContext object is not available"
export...

Interacting with Keystone in the dashboard

Now that we have worked through managing Keystone resources on the command line, let's take a look at how to do the same through the web interface. Connect to the dashboard and log in as the admin user using the password from the overcloudrc file. Select the Admin menu, and then select the identity submenu. Here, you'll see menu options to manage projects and users. Select the Users menu. You'll see the same list of users from the openstack user list command on the command-line. In the web interface, select the Create User button in the top-right corner of the User Management panel.

Fill in the form as appropriate:

Interacting with Keystone in the dashboard

Before you can create the user, you'll have to select a project. If there isn't one that you want to add the new user to in the existing list, you can create one. Projects can be created inline of a user creation. Click the button next to the project selection drop-down menu. A Create Project form will show up...

Endpoints in the dashboard

We have looked at user management in the dashboard; now let's look at service and endpoints in the web interface. The dashboard does not provide a way to add or update services and endpoints. This is something reserved for the command line because it is usually done once and does not need any more management once it is done. Click on the Project menu and the Access & Security submenu. There will be a set of tabs to select from across the top of the screen, as shown in the following screenshot. Select API Access. Does this look familiar?

Summary

In this chapter, we looked at managing services, endpoints, users, projects, and roles through both the command line and the dashboard. Now that we have created users and assigned them roles in projects to manage virtual resources, let's start collecting the resources needed to launch an instance. The first resource that is needed before an instance can be launched is a disk image for that instance to launch from.

In the next chapter, we will look at Glance, the disk image management component, and how to import and build images to launch instances.

I was looking for a condensed intro into OpenStack without having to scour the web for relevant information. With the help of this book I built a solid understanding of all the components that go into OpenStack technology and would recommend it to anyone needing to start out with OpenStack.

Wer sich wirklich mit OpenStack beschäftigen will, ist gut beraten sich die offizielle Dokumentation durchzulesen. Die Inhalte im Buch werfen mehr Fragen auf als das sie sie beantworten

Poorly written. Clearly rushed into print with no editorial review. Sentences just stop mid sentence with no punctuation. Pretty verbose on some basics that anyone reading this should know. Seems like someone's publishing homework rough draft.
