Principles of network architecting
Designing networks differs from one organization to another. Organizations regard their designs to be proprietary, including IP addresses, virtual LAN (VLAN) assignments, firewall rules, and the overall naming conventions used, yet the concepts are the same. However, all networks follow the same principles. It’s these principles that help ensure these networks are designed in a way that is secure, reliable, and meets the needs of the organization.
Note
There are pros and cons to each network architecture type. And in my opinion, there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. Every organization will have an opinion on what they believe they need, and it’s up to the network architect to make sure the correct design is in place.
Some of the key principles of network architecting include the following:
- Hierarchical
- Scalability
- Modularity
- Resilience
- Performant
Let’s explore each.
