Understanding the prerequisites for supported file server protection


This section will cover the prerequisites for a supported file server protection scenario. The following list provides the supported versions for the file server workload:

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 (after applying UR2)

  • Windows Server 2008 (after applying UR2)

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1

  • Windows Server 2012

  • Windows Server 2012 R2

For System Center Data Protection Manager to be able to protect a volume of data, it must be formatted with NTFS or ReFS and be at least 1 GB in size. This is due to the fact that VSS will only provide a snapshot if the volume is greater than 1 GB and still be able to maintain 64 snapshots of the protected data.

For System Center Data Protection Manager to be able to protect and restore deduplicated volumes or data, the server role for data deduplication must be installed on the DPM server; this is installed by default when you install the DPM server software.
