As discussed in the previous chapter, Microsoft provides several tools that can assist in planning for migrations or actually migrating data, including the following:
- SMAT: Planning and assessment for on-premises-to-cloud migrations
- SPMT: Content scanning and migration tool for on-premises-to-cloud migrations of SharePoint and file server content
- SharePoint Migration Manager: Migration tool for on-premises file shares to SharePoint Online
- Mover.io: Cloud-to-cloud migration scenarios, including SharePoint- and Google-based solutions
Each of those tools has its own use cases. For on-premises-to-cloud migrations, most organizations choose to use SMAT and SPMT—they have the longest track record, and both Microsoft support and the technical community are familiar with their configurations and outputs.
