Short history recap
In the 90s, Windows was the main widespread OS with a rich GUI experience and enough SW for it. Back then, Linux was making its first steps as a free OS and tools suite. As the years went by, it grew widely in contributors and users and initially won a lot of business users in the server market. It also became the leading OS for scientific tools. Free alternatives to Microsoft Office were developed. Now, there are many more Linux tools and SW than Windows ones, and they are flourishing in a great distributed ecosystem. During the 90s, when there were few GUI tools on Linux, many users and industries oriented themselves to Windows. As a result, thousands of legacy and modern Windows-based applications will never have a Linux version.
