Implementing Microsoft Dynamics NAV - Third Edition

Chapter 2. What's New in NAV 2016?

There are quite a few new things in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016. The previous releases of Dynamics NAV mainly concentrated on application changes or on architectural changes. Dynamics NAV 2013 provides changes for both the aspects at the same time; Dynamics NAV 2016 made drastic improvements on what was built for NAV 2013.

In this chapter, we will have an overview of the new features included in Dynamics NAV 2016. We will first go through the features that end users will appreciate in Dynamics NAV 2016. After this, we will take a look at the features that developers and administrators will appreciate (the IT changes).

The main concepts that we will see are as follows:

  • Application changes
  • Development changes
  • IT changes
  • Deprecated features

Application changes

There are many things that have changed in the new release of Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Some features have been removed, some others have changed, and a bunch of new functionalities and improvements have been added.

The first thing that users will see is the new look and feel of Dynamics NAV. Microsoft has implemented a Metro-style design across all of their product lines. Dynamics NAV is no different. The basic design of Metro is essentially focused on the content of the application, and not its graphics.

This new look and feel for the Windows client is not all that different from its predecessors, but you will find subtle differences that give Dynamics NAV 2016 a unique characteristic.

Improvements for the application users

Several improvements have been made to the Windows client to improve user productivity. Let's see them in detail.

Cues with color indicator

On the Windows client page when you log in, the cues will be a bar that changes color based on the data.

Development changes

Dynamics NAV 2016 has introduced some development changes. These are the changes regarding the development environment with new ways to develop document type reports and changes in the standard C/AL code, which has been redesigned in some areas.

Document reporting

When Microsoft introduced Report Definition Language Client-side (RDLC) as its main report-writing tool, a lot of NAV developers cried foul. Why? Because programming NAV reports using RDLC was like pulling teeth! Add to the complexity of creating an actual report, what you get when you preview a report is often times not what gets printed out on PDF or paper. This is especially true when creating document type reports such as a sales order or sales invoice.

With the horrendous feedback for the development for RDLC reports, Microsoft got to work and released a tool to develop document type reports using Word for layout. This means you can use the pre-made templates for invoices using Word.

There are four pre-made...

IT changes

Several changes regarding IT have been introduced with the release of Dynamics NAV, including the following:

  • Easier installation and deployment
  • Easier administration
  • New clients
  • New services

Dynamics NAV Server administration

Dynamics NAV 2016 includes a new server administration tool for administering Dynamics NAV Server.

It is a snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console. When installing the server option, the server administration tool is a default feature.

Once the server option is installed, you will find it on your Windows Start menu with all the other Dynamics NAV components installed on the same machine.

From the server administration tool, we will have a clear picture of all the Dynamics NAV instances running on the machine, their version, status, and configuration (name, the database to which the instance connects, ports for the different types of services, and so on).

From the server administration tool, we can add or remove instances (we can even add instances running on...

Summary

Dynamics NAV 2016 introduces several changes compared to the previous versions of the application. These changes are applicable to all the application areas; there have been changes to the client in the way it accesses the application, to the functionality, to the way development is done, and also there have been changes related to IT.

In this chapter, we went through most of the relevant changes for an implementation introduced in Dynamics NAV 2016.

In the next chapter, we will see some general considerations about Dynamics NAV, such as the data model used in the application, the way posting routines are developed, and the SIFT technology.
