Implementing DevOps with Ansible 2

Configuration Management Essentials

If you are reading this book, you are most likely looking for a consistent way to provision infrastructure, deploy code, and maintain the operational consistency of environments. These items all fit under Configuration Management, or CM for short. Configuration Management represents a cornerstone of DevOps and is something that Ansible manages very well. Configuration Management represents a way of development where automation can be used to provision and enforce the state, consistency, and accuracy of a set of systems. In a DevOps-oriented environment, Configuration Management will become increasingly critical for maintaining development environments, QA apparatuses and systems, production environments, and more. This is because the need to maintain such environments and keep a level of consistency among them is critical for deployment and...

Understanding Configuration Management

Unless you have been living in a bubble, you will probably have seen that Configuration Management automation has taken the IT world by storm. That is to say that hosts can now be automatically configured and provisioned to be in a specific state via code (Packages Installed, Users Created and so on). The idea that infrastructure can be defined and codified is not only novel but is now the norm. Configuration Management in many ways represents to infrastructure what software development represents to end-user software products. If it's unclear at this point what CM actually is, let's quickly define it:

Configuration Management is the detailed recording and updating of information that describes an enterprise's hardware and software. Such information typically includes the versions and updates that have been applied to installed...

Origins of Configuration Management

Configuration Management can be traced back in origins to the early 1950s, an era of punch cards and large mainframe computing apparatuses. Punch cards at the time often needed to be organized and delivered to the mainframe, and as a result of this specific ordering, a requirement was mandated by larger organizations to manage the configuration of such punch cards. After the golden days of punch cards, additional management requirements came to light with regard to maintaining the state of a given software system or IT apparatus. Entities capable of managing such a process at the time were limited to the government's CDC Update and IBM's IBM IEBUPDATE, respectively.

It wasn't until the early to mid 1990s that software Configuration Management (CM for short) began to be taken notice of in mid- to large-scale organizations. Companies...

The Aims of Configuration Management

Configuration Management's goal is to facilitate the lives of developers, quality assurance personnel, management, and operational personnel by providing them with the tools and automation necessary to track and implement additional changes and configurations for a target system. The general logic flow of Configuration Management goes something like this:

If I spend four hours configuring a given development system for a developer to use, and then the developer quits the next day, and a new developer gets hired, I have just wasted eight hours. Whereas if I spend eight hours writing a single set of automated scripts to automatically provision a development system and the automation takes 20 minutes to run from start to finish, I can now recreate the developer system easily and with minimal fuss and ceremony.

On a very basic level, this...

Basic Principles of Configuration Management

Configuration Management aims to help engineering organizations manage the infrastructure, create reusable automation, and provide a strategy for managing change within. As such, Configuration Management purports to provide the following basic principles:

  • Automate where automation is possible
  • Provide traceability within the enterprise
  • Provide developers, QA, operations, and management with a reproducible infrastructure that is managed through software-development best practices
  • Develop a strategy for how new hardware will be provisioned and configured (in an automated way)
  • Manage hardware configurations effectively and with strategy
  • Develop mechanisms that provide a self-service model for deploying infrastructure changes
  • Educate the organization on Configuration Management practices

Now that we have a basic understanding of the principles...

Configuration Management Best Practices

Now that we have a basic understanding of Configuration Management's overarching purpose and how it can be leveraged in an enterprise, let's take a look at some best practices involved in Configuration Management. Configuration Management in the modern software enterprise comes in many forms. Some of the more popular tools for Configuration Management are listed as follows:

  • Ansible
  • Chef
  • Puppet
  • CFEngine

Solutions such as these are mostly open source options that provide ways to keep and maintain infrastructure in code form, or IaC (Infrastructure as Code). For those unfamiliar with IaC, here is a general definition from Wikipedia:

Infrastructure as Code is the process of managing and provisioning computing infrastructure (processes, bare-metal servers, virtual servers, and so on) and their configuration through machine-processable...

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
