Definition of terms

The following terms are important to understand when setting up shipping. Commerce is using industry standards, but the difference between a shipping method and shipping service can be subtle:

Shipping method
Shipping service

Shipping method

A shipping method is the physical method of moving the order—for example UPS, FedEx, and Royal Mail.

In this chapter we will be looking at the Flat Rate shipping method which allows you to calculate the shipping for an order, but does not integrate with any third-party systems.

Shipping service

A shipping service is what will be presented to the customer—for example, Standard delivery, Express delivery, and so on.
