DevOps Culture and Practice with OpenShift

Section 1: Practices Make Perfect

In this section, we are going to introduce the book, where it came from, and how it's organized.

Chapter 1, Introduction – Start with Why focuses on the book's purpose and the target audience. Chapter 2, Introducing DevOps and Some Tools explains, in our words, what DevOps is and how it helps speed up the value chain of product development. We'll explore what this chain is and the bottlenecks that DevOps culture and practices address. We'll introduce a couple of important tools that we'll use throughout the book to navigate around the use of many different types of practices we're going to apply. In Chapter 3, The Journey Ahead, we will introduce how we use real-world stories and the case study we'll use throughout the book that will outline how the remaining six sections of the book are organized.

This will set us up to build a foundation and start a journey of continuous discovery, options, and continuous delivery.

Wow. Despite being huge I found this book super easy to read, full of practical help and advice that I was able to put into practice immediately. The real work examples coupled with theory and a heavy dose of fun makes this a DevOps bible for anybody looking to adopt or improve their capabilities. I’m a firm believer that success starts with the creation and nurturing of high performing teams. This provides steps to building empowered, long lived, cross functional product teams. If you’re at the point where you see that technology is just an enabler for transformation and that the hard parts are building the right culture and adopting effective practices, this book is for you. Apply the contents and you’ll be well on your way to building the culture of experimentation and the psychological safety necessary to tackle any problem. The technical practices make it accessible for non-techies to contribute and engage with technical challenges too… in short; get it!

This is by far the best and most practical book I have read about how modern organizations can build software by combining Agile, DevOps, Design Thinking and much more in a cohesive way. It is a no-nonsense approach which anyone can follow with their team and a bit like a Lonely Planet guide to modern Software Development. It is huge, but make no mistake, this is more like several different books in one addressing everything from how to get started to how to scale at enterprise level. If you ever wanted to have an organization of high-performing team who are not one-trick ponies, but really get how to leverage best of the methods and tools out there to the advantage of your customers - look no further.
