Cloud Native Architectures

The Cloud Adoption Journey

Becoming a cloud native company is undeniably a journey, and one that is not only focused on technology. As demonstrated by the Netflix case study, this journey can take a very long time to do correctly and will often be full of tough decisions, including those relating to technology and business trade-offs. In addition, this journey is never-ending. The cloud is still in its infancy and the innovations being delivered by major cloud vendors are accelerating, not slowing down. This chapter will identify the drivers that are often used to make a cloud adoption decision. It will examine the frameworks that are commonly used as organizations start down the cloud adoption path and will explain what components and approaches are taken with a cloud migration. Finally, it will describe how to build a comprehensive cloud operating model that takes into...

Cloud adoption drivers

Adopting the cloud is not an accident, but a decision that has to be made. That decision, however, is the starting point of a long journey that will involve lots of manpower, processes, and technology changes. There are many reasons why an organization will make this decision, with agility and cost factors often being very high on the list. However, there are other important factors that are considered along with those, including security and governance of company assets, the regional or international expansion of operations, and a desire to attract top technical talent or to take advantage of the technical innovations being developed. Companies of all sizes are using these drivers to determine their journey to the cloud, and this section will explain why these drivers are important and how they impact the decision-making process.

...

The cloud operating model

Once an organization evaluates the cloud adoption drivers and makes the decision to begin a cloud journey, this is when the work begins, but how? According to Amazon Web Services' Cloud Adoption Framework (https://d0.awsstatic.com/whitepapers/aws_cloud_adoption_framework.pdf), "Cloud adoption requires that fundamental changes are discussed and considered across the entire organization, and that stakeholders across all organizational units—both outside and within IT—support these changes". Furthermore, the three typical areas of focus – people, processes, and technology – still apply to the cloud journey, but that is too simple for the scale of the change being made. This journey will involve business owners, human resource considerations, and procurement changes, and will require strong governance...

Cloud migration versus greenfield development

After the decision to move to the cloud is made and the frameworks and guardrails are in place and some initial success achieved, almost always, the big question will come down to migration of large amounts of workloads. A cloud migration is defined as the movement of applications, data, or other components from their existing location (usually on-premises) to the cloud. A greenfield development project is one in which there are no legacy constraints imposed on the design and, therefore, a completely new implementation is the outcome. Migrations and greenfield development often exist side by side, where legacy workloads are being migrated into the target cloud operating environment and all new projects are designed as cloud native.

This section will break down common migration patterns, tools that are used in migrations, and how...

Summary

In this chapter, we identified what exactly is reason why companies make the decision to move to the cloud. Understanding these key drivers – agility, cost, security, governance, expansion, talent, and innovation – and their level of maturity within the company, will drive the final decision to make the journey. Once the decision is made, it is critical to define and implement the operating model, which will assure stakeholders, as well as change and project management, that risk and compliance requirements are managed and implemented to ensure success in the cloud. Finally, we reviewed the major migration patterns that will enable workloads to be moved to the cloud. While some organizations will skip the migration and start a fresh in the cloud, most companies will require this step, and it is important that they do it correctly. A cloud-first company will...

Key benefits

  • Understand the core design elements required to build scalable systems
  • Plan resources and technology stacks effectively for high security and fault tolerance
  • Explore core architectural principles using real-world examples

Description

Cloud computing has proven to be the most revolutionary IT development since virtualization. Cloud native architectures give you the benefit of more flexibility over legacy systems. To harness this, businesses need to refresh their development models and architectures when they find they don’t port to the cloud. Cloud Native Architectures demonstrates three essential components of deploying modern cloud native architectures: organizational transformation, deployment modernization, and cloud native architecture patterns. This book starts with a quick introduction to cloud native architectures that are used as a base to define and explain what cloud native architecture is and is not. You will learn what a cloud adoption framework looks like and develop cloud native architectures using microservices and serverless computing as design principles. You’ll then explore the major pillars of cloud native design including scalability, cost optimization, security, and ways to achieve operational excellence. In the concluding chapters, you will also learn about various public cloud architectures ranging from AWS and Azure to the Google Cloud Platform. By the end of this book, you will have learned the techniques to adopt cloud native architectures that meet your business requirements. You will also understand the future trends and expectations of cloud providers.

Who is this book for?

Cloud Native Architectures is for software architects who are keen on designing resilient, scalable, and highly available applications that are native to the cloud.

What you will learn

  • Learn the difference between cloud native and traditional architecture
  • Explore the aspects of migration, when and why to use it
  • Identify the elements to consider when selecting a technology for your architecture
  • Automate security controls and configuration management
  • Use infrastructure as code and CICD pipelines to run environments in a sustainable manner
  • Understand the management and monitoring capabilities for AWS cloud native application architectures

I think the core concept of this book is Cloud Native Maturity Model. While it is not ideally thought through, it can still help a lot in understanding where your architecture stands and if it is ready for the cloud. Just rank each layer of all three CNMM axes and you will see how good your architecture is.

This is a comprehensive and extremely well written book on implementing Cloud Native Architectural concepts, and there can be no better advertisement for this book other than the fact that this has been written by senior AWS experts who live and breathe this technology on a day to day basis. What is really interesting is that the authors discuss not just the Amazon stack but also Azure and GCP from a cloud native perspective. In addition, I found the discussions in Chapter 4 (How to choose Technology Stacks) and Chapter 5 (Scalability and Availability), especially the section related to Cloud native toolkits, to be extremely useful. The case study on Netflix provides an interesting read on how companies have become successful implementing various cloud native design patterns discussed in this book. This should be on the bookshelf of every single Cloud Practitioner out there, regardless of whether you are an aspiring one or a seasoned professional!
