As a teacher that was challenged with suddenly transitioning to Canvas LMS during the COVID-19 pandemic, I did not have the time to explore the various features and creative ways Canvas can support students. I found myself in survival mode. This book allowed me to explore beyond the Canvas basics by offering suggestions for supporting students with building "21st-century skills" such as netiquette, collaboration, and discussions using Canvas features. This book is a great choice for novice Canvas educators and skilled Canvas educators alike.

As EdTech coordinator at an international independent PK-12 school in NYC, I’m currently in the difficult position of selecting a new LMS (we are moving away of PowerSchool Unified Classroom). The truth is that only a few of the available platforms offer the necessary tools to cater for the diverse needs of a PK-12 school that uses Standard Based Grading. For us, at this point, the candidates are Schoology and Canvas. Because we have worked with PowerSchool for a long time, I’ve had the chance to use and test Schoology extensively. I cannot say the same about Canvas; I never had the opportunity to use this platform as an educator. Fortunately, this book appeared on my path, and it has been extremely useful to understand the workflow in Canvas. The step-by-step approach, and the fact that it’s written by an educator, are huge advantage points. Ryan John does a great job explaining every topic through the lens of a teacher but always keeping the student in mind. He’ll show you how to import content from other compatible platforms, how to create and edit assignments, how to add quizzes, how to publish your course and view it as a student, how to communicate with your students through Canvas and he’ll show you the basics of the Learning Mastery Gradebook. The graphics and charts used by Ryan John will be of great help to you if you are a visual learner. I now feel equipped to lead some Canvas trials at school after reading this book. I recommend this book if you're starting with Canvas, or if you want to learn of its new tools to support in-person, online or hybrid teaching and learning.

I actually got this book for a friend so this is a second hand review reflecting the abundant thanks that flowed back my direction. The friend is a senior faculty member in the position of having to transition from Blackboard to Canvas. She was really struggling with how to get her classes built in Canvas after years in Blackboard. I bought her this book and she says it made her life so much better. She has dutifully worked her way through, building her courses with this book open beside her. She considers this book a Godsend.

Ryan John has written an excellent reference for those who want to learn Canvas quickly. Our school is considering moving to Canvas from another LMS system and I am one of the people evaluating the system. I like the fact that you can follow the book with either an institutional account or a “Free for Teachers” account, and Ryan gives clear examples for both. I am using the free account and I appreciate the clear direction given. Whether you are an educator, a school administrator, or an IT person needing to learn Canvas quickly to support your institution, I believe this book will help you immensely. This book is very good for educators, as not only does Ryan talk about how to do something, but why do it a certain way. His instructions in the book are purpose-driven. He talks about making the Canvas experience better for students and that should be the goal of any teacher designing a page and content on Canvas. Ryan, thank you for creating this wonderful book!
Ryan John teaches at Léman Manhattan Preparatory School in New York City. He holds degrees from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, where he has served as an adjunct professor, technical assistant, and course designer for online learning. Ryan spent 3 years as a technical assistant for the pilot program of Canvas LMS at Rider University and has delivered over a dozen online courses for students in middle school through adult continuing education. Ryan has presented his scholarly work in the US and abroad, and his publications include Canvas LMS Course Design (2014), Planning Instruction in Music (2015), Becoming Musical (2017), and Planning Instruction in Music Online (2020).
