While GDB is a classic tool, sometimes having a GUI debugger has its advantages. Let's introduce EDB, sometimes referred to as Evan's Debugger. Sure, free versions of IDA are available and you're welcome to choose what works best for you. As I already mentioned, I was first introduced to EDB when partaking in a hands-on, well-known penetration testing training. Specifically, we used EDB to successfully find and exploit a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability on Linux. Having the GUI and all of the information we could ever want laid out in a clean, easy-to-use format makes this tool top notch.
