Sync Break Indicators: Understanding them and making your own


If you are editing without your Sync Locks enabled, it is possible to knock one or more tracks out of sync with the others. Sync Locks are discussed in more detail later in this chapter.

When the tracks no longer align or sync properly, if the video and audio come from the same clip (or have been AutoSynced), then Media Composer will display what Avid calls Sync Break Indicators. These are the small white or black numbers (depending on the color of your tracks) that appear in the segments (shots) when they are out of alignment. Media Composer is able to determine sync breaks because it's programmed to compare a segment's clip source data and timecode across tracks. If the segments on the different tracks come from the same clip and the timecode numbers align, then they are in sync. If they don't align, then that means the timecode numbers do not match and Media Composer can easily calculate the amount of frames for which they are...
