Labeling with Maplex Label Engine


In the previous recipe, you worked with the Standard Label Engine parameter. In this recipe, you will use the Maplex Label Engine parameter to create high-quality dynamic labels. The dynamic labels will be placed and oriented on the map based on criteria such as best fitting, density, or priority and weight rankings for features and labels that are overlapping.

The Maplex Label Engine parameter allows you to control the displayed text of the label using the Abbreviation Dictionary tool.

There are three types of abbreviations:

  • Translation: The value of the label will be replaced with a custom one; the abbreviation is used whether there is space or not to display the label (for example, A can be used in place of Arable).

  • Keyword: This will return an acronym formed by the first letter of each word from the label; the abbreviation is used only if there is not enough space to display the label (for example, DA in place of Dwelling Annex or GSG in place of Gibson...
