Accession
Accession is a very special type of transfer operation. It typically only applies to federal agencies that have an obligation for transferring their records to the National Archive and Records Administration, or NARA, for permanent storage.
The mechanics of accession are similar to those of the standard transfer process. The difference between transfer and accession is that, with accession, the organization that had been managing the records transfers not only just the records, but also all responsibility and authority for them to another organization, typically NARA. Under a normal transfer, the organization performing the transfer would continue to maintain complete authority over them, although they may no longer reside in the original records system after the transfer.
