Setting up data access for objects and fields

Profiles and Permission Sets can both be used to control the data access permissions for objects and fields for users in the Lightning Platform. Within Profile or Permission Sets, there is a setting or collection of settings that are used to specify the objects and fields along with the types of operations that can be carried out on the objects and fields.

Data access at the object level can be considered to be the bluntest method of controlling access to record data for a specific type of object. Object-level data access is set by granting the privileges in the Profile assigned to the user or by creating and assigning multiple Permission Sets.

Object-level data access forms an overarching level of data security access and determines whether users are able to create, read, edit, and delete records of the specified object type.
