Getting to know the configuration files and NetworkManager
Now that we have learned about some of the keywords and concepts of networking, it's the time to look at where we can use them to get our system networked.
Traditionally, network interfaces were configured via text files in the system, under the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
folder. Those scripts were processed via the utilities provided via the network-scripts
package, which took care of getting the networking stack up and running with the defined configuration.
Important note
Although the network-scripts
package is available and can be installed, it is considered to be deprecated, which means that the package is provided and available but might disappear in future major versions of the operating system, so they will only be provided to ease the transition toward the updated methods.
