Cartopy is a third-party toolkit for plotting geographical maps on top of Matplotlib. Cartopy is expected to replace basemap by 2020. Cartopy has a wide variety of features that allow it to cater to many different user communities. Here we will try to cover most of the features typically used in business enterprises.
Geographical maps are plotted in longitude and latitude, both measured in degrees. Longitude is plotted on x axis, and varies from 180 degrees to the west (-180) to 180 degrees to the east (180). Latitude is plotted on the y axis, and varies from 90 degrees to the south (-90) to 90 degrees to the north (90). Locations on the map are identified with their longitude and latitude values.
