Creating and editing attribute data
You can add a new attribute field to a layer table only outside of an edit session. When you add or delete a field in a feature class table, the file geodatabase structure (or schema) is updated. You cannot change the geodatabase schema inside the edit session. During the edit session, ArcGIS locks the schema of the feature class that is being edited, and the user can only create and edit feature shapes and edit the attribute values on the existing table structure.
Editing the feature attributes
The process of attributes editing follows the same steps that are used to edit feature shapes.
There are two main ways to view and edit the feature attributes: using layer attribute table or using the Attribute dialog window.
