Motivating engineering teams to take action
Engineering teams are highly focused on delivering features with speed and agility so the business can capture new markets, attract new customers, improve efficiency, and find new revenue streams. FinOps teams require attention and commitment to bring the visibility of spending, but these initiatives are often treated as low priority by engineering teams. In the Operate phase, FinOps teams establish processes so the visibility they gain can be converted either into cost savings or optimized cloud spending.
The FinOps team has two approaches to handle the engineering team’s inability to commit. The first approach is to incentivize engineering teams who commit to initiatives and act in time to produce the desired results. The second approach is to scrutinize or penalize teams for not acting on FinOps recommendations and producing the desired results.
