Understanding iMovie for macOS – libraries and events
When you open iMovie for the first time, you’ll be met with an empty projects screen. You can choose to create a trailer or movie by clicking on the large + icon. Trailer mode is the iMovie for macOS equivalent of Storyboard mode, which is available on iOS and iPadOS. If you don’t have a mobile Apple device, iMovie for macOS will probably be your first foray into video editing. For that reason, you might be tempted to start with Trailer mode, using the templates to get to grips with clips and arranging media. However, the structure of filling in the gaps is very different from the timeline paradigm, and because the timeline paradigm is the dominant structure for NLEs, I’d recommend starting your learning journey on the Mac with its own Movie mode.
