Understanding server virtualization
Let’s try to understand virtualization from a technical point of view while considering technology that allows you to set up a VM. By doing this, we can execute the OS, application, and other favorite tools on that VM. Additionally, virtualization allows you to set up storage devices and network resources. Thus, instead of running ten physical servers, all those servers can be organized to run in one physical server in a virtualized mode.
Windows Server 2022 comes equipped with a Hyper-V feature that enables virtualization. As a descendant of Windows Virtual PC, Microsoft’s Hyper-V was introduced in Windows Server 2008. Since then, Hyper-V has managed to attract the interest of system administrators, thereby positioning itself firmly in competition with VMware in terms of virtualization platform market shares. In technical terms, Hyper-V provides the services that are used to create and manage VMs and their resources.
