Patch definitions are metadata about patches that are made available by the patch source. These definitions allow you to download all of the available patch information, without needing to download all of the patch bundles. Like the patches, the definitions are downloaded from an internet source—VMware or the hardware vendor.

Getting ready
Before you begin, it is essential to ensure that the desired patch sources have been configured. By default, Update Manager includes a patch source from VMware, which you can access by going to https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml.
The configuration for patch sources is available under the Settings | Patch Setup...
