Long-distance vMotion
Hosting virtualized multi-tier applications is a common challenge for vSphere administrators. The need is to have the resources close enough to the end-users, to fulfill speed requirements. On the other hand, another often requested requirement is to spread workloads to alternate computing resources. This is often needed to fulfill complex disaster scenarios requirements to avoid any unplanned downtime.
VMware overhauled its proven vMotion technology to address the following eliminating demands:
Stretched cluster architectures (metro clustering)
Hybrid cloud setups
Multisite load-balancing
This technology allows vMotion operations over network connections with up to 100ms Round Trip Time (RTT) latencies. Previous vMotion implementation limited the nondisruptive live migration of running virtual machines to network connections with up to 10ms RTT latency.
For the first time, this enables the customers to migrate workloads between continents in an adequate timely manner.
