Finding Errors
One value of the intermediate database is that if errors are found in a spreadsheet, and if the errors need to be corrected, it is relatively simple to destroy the intermediate database and recreate it.
The intermediate database gives the organization a “second chance” at creating valid corporate data.
In addition, the intermediate database gives the analyst a “sand box” to play in, where data can be easily created and recreated without having to commit to a final format.
A third value of the intermediate database is that it creates a place where several spreadsheets can be processed together and where the merger of the spreadsheets can be considered without having to make a commitment to the final corporate database.
In short, the intermediate database gives the organization a lot of flexibility in its movement from spreadsheet data to corporate data.
