As a junior web developer, I found this book very helpful in de-mystifying pair programming. I have heard the term, of course, but this book was pivotal in allowing me to better understand the concept and the practical ways to go about learning how to pair program. In this day and age, and especially with many jobs now being fully remote, I feel like this subject is more relevant than ever, whether you are just learning programming, or a seasoned veteran. Adrian's writing style, to me, was very down to earth, understandable, and relatable. Now that I have read the book, I can't wait to find someone to pair program with!

Although this is a book about remote pair programming, it is also a book about guiding environments to emerge where people learn more effectively and work more harmoniously.Even if you tried to focus on its helpful advice about setting up better lighting in your office or which remote collaboration tools are "best" for your needs, you'll almost certainly also be thinking about how pair programming creates opportunities for learning both about code and about how to work with each other. This book is eminently practical because it makes specific suggestions about what to try and how to do it well, but without the sense of trying to show you the One True Way. Without pushing, it shows us that pair programming can help us improve our code, while also providing us opportunities to talk more openly about how to work better together. With this book, your group can focus on programming problems while subconsciously---maybe even accidentally---becoming a more-effective team, even when they can't be in the same place at the same time.

I see value in this book for most software teams, especially as many companies have embraced remote and/or distributed teams. The book does cover many aspects from recommendations and examples of pair programming techniques to practical guidance on setting up a pair programming practice.I appreciated the pace and tone of the book as it was at the right level for a book that was less about syntax or code, and more about how to work more efficiently in team environments. The book has a practical approach to determining when and when not to use pair programming. The last time I explored this concept was with Extreme Programming. This book extends upon the driver/navigator concept to identify scenarios that cover different qualities of the individuals. For example, when the pair includes different experience levels, familiarity with the product/project, or different roles like a developer and a tester.Thank you Adrian, very appropriate timing for the current company I am working with.

The book contains two main sections. In the first section, Adrian directly targets readers learning pair programming, aiming to improve pair programming skills, and trying to convince the team and the managers about the benefits of pair programming. What I liked the most here is the objectivity in explanations. Both "how it works" and "how it does not work" are mentioned with real-life examples. I found a long list of tips and tricks to improve my pairing skills, and I found it very valuable. Especially best practices and anti-patterns make me re-evaluate the way I pair.Adrian tries to give answers to the questions everyone asks, like how we can pair with other roles in the team, what are the situations we should not pair, how often we should pair, is two people working on the same task waste, etc. As an active practitioner, the answers seem very logical and realistic to me.The second section is about remote pair programming. Adrian targets the ones who practice remote pair programming. Distributed teams need different communication styles and pairing techniques, and all are explained with examples. Adrian lists all the tools and equipment with comparisons. Since I've been pairing remotely for a long time, I already have a setup, and I skipped these chapters. If you haven't established a setup yet, these sections can guide you indeed.I find very valuable the chapters where Adrian explains how to use source code versioning to improve remote pair programming. A list of good practices and anti-patterns for remote pair programming was also so interesting to me.In a summary, I advise this book not only the ones who want to practice/improve remote pair programming, but also the ones who are new to pair programming or eager to improve the way they pair.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
