Taking It Up a Notch – Scalable, Robust, and Secure Architectures
Strong architecture is fundamental to building an IoT system. This chapter will address the need for an architectural framework to develop scalable, secure, and robust Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) applications. We will cover the broad spectrum of industry-wide architecture IIoT design considerations with references to the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) and Reference Architecture Model Industrie (RAMI) 4.0.
We start by building on the five S principles of sound architecture design and then look at system considerations. These are guard rails that every architect must consider as they design enterprise-scale industrial solutions. We will cover two critical tenets of architecture design for Industry 4.0: the Asset Administrative Shell (AAS) and the Digital Service Bus (DSB).
