In-Situ Environmental Monitoring
When we think of industry, we often envision factories or large processing plants; however, industry is more than just manufacturing. We can expand our definition to consume other branches of the economy and the production of materials or goods. In addition, service classes of industry can also be considered. In most cases, digitizing these environments and transitioning to a data-driven approach can improve operations and efficiency for many everyday processes and activities. And finally, there are just remote and hard-to-reach places where instrumentation and monitoring are useful (think cold chain management).
Before we delve into manufacturing and machine monitoring, we want to look at monitoring solutions more holistically. In this chapter, we will explore several common industries and use cases for environmental data collection, focusing on the approach and the ultimate value we can derive from our data.
