Summary

While many people are familiar with the term data literacy, very few are sure what competencies are related to data literacy, and even fewer people are aware of which of those competencies are relevant to their role. Individuals and organizations alike all highlight the importance of data literacy, but few have offered targeted data literacy education. Part of the reason for this is it is a combination of technical skills and soft skills, as well as mindsets, and those components are not typically taught together.

In this chapter, we defined what a data literacy competency framework is as well as what skills and mindsets are relevant for each competency. We also learned which of the seven phases of the process of interacting with data each competency falls under. This is important as it gives a structured framework to learn from. You can now understand which competencies are relevant to your role with data, and start finding relevant training courses or similar content.
