Understanding conversation design
Conversation design is a complex and involved role that is key to creating a chatbot or voice assistant that is helpful and natural and, as a result, successful. There are other roles in the field of conversation design, particularly that of an AI trainer and variations of this role. For the purpose of this book, we will consider these other roles when discussing conversation design, as there is considerable overlap between the tasks carried out for many of them.
Conversation design leverages the principles of user experience design, linguistics, cognitive psychology, and AI to create engaging, interactive experiences between humans and machines over the medium of voice or text. At their core, conversation designers understand communications, the technology landscape of conversational AI, the mediums to deploy to their users, and how to satisfy user requirements.
