Utilities and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
In order for data centers to operate efficiently, they must maintain certain levels of temperature and humidity. Control systems installed to maintain the proper environment for data centers are known as HVAC systems.
HVAC systems make sure that the humidity is not too high as this could cause the corrosion of computer components, and not too low because this could cause static shock leading to a system fault. The proper humidity level should be between 40 and 50%. Temperature should be kept at about 65°F or 19°C. If the temperature gets too high, components can melt.
To ensure that temperature and humidity are at an optimum level, server rooms should be designed to make the environment operate under the best conditions. This can be done by implementing hot and cold aisles. Servers should be placed in such a way that their hot sides face only each other, and the air intake or cold sides face each other...
