Identity and Access Management

AWS Identity and Access Management or IAM is a web service that provides secured access control mechanisms for all AWS services. You can use IAM to create users and groups, assigning users specific permissions and policies, and a lot more. The best part of all this is that IAM is completely FREE. Yup! Not a penny is required to use it.

Let's quickly look at some interesting IAM features in order to understand it a bit better:

  • Shared access to a single account: With the sign in process completed, you currently are the sole owner and user of your AWS account. But what if you wanted to give access to few other users from within your organization to this account? You cannot just provide them with your username and password, right? Neither will you go and create a separate account for each user, as it is too tedious and not good practice.
