Technical requirements
To prepare a design to be manufactured using 3D printing technology, a CAM program will need to be used. CAM programs vary from printer to printer, so it is important to identify which CAM program is needed for the resources you have available. Unlike Tinkercad, many CAM programs are not web-based and would need to be installed on a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer.
There are generic CAM programs that work with a wide range of 3D printers, such as Slic3r (https://slic3r.org), Cura (https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura/), and Autodesk Fusion (https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360). If you are constrained to using a tablet or Chromebook device, Fusion and Kiri:Moto (https://grid.space/kiri/) both offer a browser-based interface like Tinkercad. But if you don’t have a 3D printer of your own, we will also be looking at 3D printing services available through Tinkercad later in this chapter as well!
