Submittal overview


There are many ways to define a "submittal." As far as PCM is concerned, it is anything that requires an approval. This is a pretty broad description; let's narrow it down a bit. It is anything that is to be submitted to the project as a requirement of the drawings or specifications that must be "approved" before moving forward. This can include the following (although certainly not an exhaustive list):

  • Shop drawings

  • Cut sheets

  • Samples

  • MSDS sheets

  • Closeout items

These are items that require approval prior to continuing on with the purchasing or fabrication of a particular item. This may seem unimportant; however, studies have shown that poor submittal processing and management play a key role in delays and added costs to a project. If a certain item cannot be ordered unless it is approved by the owner or engineer and if the approval is delayed for some reason, the item cannot be ordered. If the item cannot be ordered then of course it can't be delivered to the site for installation...
