DevOps Overview

From a high level, DevOps looks like an infinite loop where by following the workflow, each cycle finishes, allowing the next cycle to start. The loop does not have a start or end because a team may take over work at any step in the cycle. Occasionally, a team member may specialize in one step in the process, but the most effective teams are cross-functional and multi-skilled.

The effective DevOps project manager may also be a great Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) practitioner. The best developer may also have an affinity for tool creation. The key support technician may have the best pre-deployment testing skills. All team members are expected to both support end users as well as invest in the feedback loop. In today’s technology environment, vertical specialists have become a liability due to software development life cycles, which are in 2-to-6-week increments as well as achieving obsolescence within 18 to 36 weeks.
