The book starts by describing basic monitoring concepts and types of monitoring that are rolled out in a large-scale IT production engineering environment. Moving on, the book covers how standard monitoring features are implemented on the Datadog platform and how they can be rolled out in a real-world production environment. As you advance, you'll discover how Datadog is integrated with popular software components that are used to build cloud platforms. If you’re new to cloud monitoring, then you should have this book. If you’re learning Datadog, then you must read this one. This book provide very clear and detail example with step by step to guide you, and it also cover plenty of key elements in cloud computing, and knowledge about data center related.I self-study to learn Datadog the monitoring tools that widely used by Devops, SRE in techs, this book really helps me to gain the knowledge on cloud monitoring. The way it describes the tech terms is easily to understand and pick up. I really recommend to study this book for Datadog.

Disclaimer: I am a Senior DevOps professional having 4 years experience with DataDog on a large scale AWS hosted application. I received a copy of this book for evaluation.Monitoring is a very complex but absolutely critical part of any commercial SaaS product success. In almost all cases it will be time and cost effective to choose a monitoring and logging solution over building one in-house. Furthermore, with the shortage of SREs' time, it is often best to use a service such as DataDog rather than managing your own open-sourced monitoring solution. This book starts with the fundamentals of modern application monitoring and a brief description of the various commercial and open-source solutions that are available. It then covers the implementation of DataDog with a primary focus on agent configuration in Ubuntu Linux, docker and Kubernetes. With that in mind, it does that very well and offers best practices. The various areas of monitoring are covered including integrations for infrastructure, containers, APM, and synthetics. Metrics, events and tags come together in alerts, graphs and dashboards. And these are areas where DataDog really shines. There is one chapter briefly dedicated to logs. Logging is a huge topic in itself and this guide quickly describes implementation of log collection and some of the more powerful features such as using DataDog to extract metrics from unstructured logs.Notably missing from this quick start guide is a discussion of DataDog's pricing models, estimating and controlling costs of the service. DataDog has a free tier and when combined with this quick start guide anyone could do a hands on evaluation of DataDog using an Ubuntu VM.The author recommends this guide for DevOps engineers, SREs, IT production engineers and System Administrators. I would extend that to include Software Architects, Cloud Architects, and Application Developers. In particular, "full stack" developers would benefit greatly. Again the examples are given for Ubuntu Linux, Docker, and Kubernetes. If you are using for example Windows on Azure, I would not recommend this guide.Overall, this quick start guide packs a huge amount of knowledge into just over 200 pages. There is a logical progression from basic monitoring concepts and terminology to the more advanced topics. If you are thinking of using or evaluating DataDog or if your organization is already using it and you need to ramp up quickly, this guide is for you.

The book is a great way for teams to get started on Datadog. It's something I'm recommending to my teams who are unfamiliar with DD, and gets everyone on the same page quickly.
