Sketching and developing a character design

Now that we’re aware of simple methods to approach sketching, let’s look at ways to develop a figure drawing into a character design. This should include brainstorming, and writing ideas for your character’s personality, physical traits, skills, interests, gifts, special powers, costume, and so on.

Important note

Before we begin this section, note that I was halfway through drawing the character design when I noticed a lot of lag and unresponsiveness while painting in small areas of the face. The paint was either not flowing from the brush or skipping spots before it laid down paint.

I tried different brushes; I thought it was my pen tablet malfunctioning; so I changed nibs. I had no luck until I opened a different image editing program and saw that it was working just fine.

So, I went to the Image menu and reduced the inches of the file from 8.5” x 11” to 6” x 7.76”, and the paint...
